In 1966 a few enthusiastic amateur astronomers from Ottobeuren came together to practice their hobby astronomy.

On a plateau, south of Ottobeuren, 746 meters above sea level, they found ideal conditions for sky observations: a minimum of light pollution, great visibility to all cardinal points and easy access via picturesque walking trails and on the state road coming from Bad Groenenbach.

1969, after over 4000 working hours accomplished by the members, the observatory was inaugurated and opened for the first guided tour. To meet the requirements of steadily increasing attendance the observatory expanded it’s capacity and technical equipment in 1988.

With extensive personal contribution, combined with financial support by our local and rural communities and the German Youth Hostel Federation, our observatory developed to a modern and efficient observatory. It serves now for public astronomy education as well as for ambitious amateur astronomical space exploration.
